What Is Biomimetic Dentistry?

Biomimetic dentistry is a dental approach focused on restoring teeth with materials and techniques that mimic the natural properties of your teeth. Unlike traditional dental procedures that often involve drilling and the removal of healthy tooth structure, biomimetic dentistry preserves as much of your natural tooth as possible, ensuring long-term health and strength.

WHY CHOOSE a Biomimetic Dentist?

  • The protocols and materials used are the gold standard in dentistry so you will only get the best materials available placed in your mouth
  • Reduces the chance of pain after getting fillings or other dental work
  • Much higher chance to avoid a root canal
  • A biomimetic dentist has the skills and knowledge to save teeth that other dentists might extract
  • A biomimetic dentist is less likely to take a surgical approach to repair badly broken teeth

How Biomimetic Dentistry Works

Step 1: Rubber Dam Placement and Fiber Mesh Insertion

We use a rubber dam to isolate your tooth from the bacteria in your saliva, protecting your mouth from damage during treatment.

We reconstruct the tooth from the inside out, making it less likely to fracture in the future. This is done by adding a fiber mesh inside the layers of filling within the tooth. The mesh acts like rebar inside a cement wall, helping to reinforce the tooth from within.

Step 2: Selective Caries Removal

We take time and care to preserve the healthy nerves in your teeth, which helps avoid root canal treatment. Selective caries removal allows us to carefully remove only the decayed parts of the tooth, preserving the healthy nerve tissue.

Step 3: Rebuilding the Tooth with Biocompatible Materials

For badly broken-down teeth with healthy roots, we carefully isolate the tooth using a rubber dam and rebuild the tooth with biocompatible materials. These materials bond to your tooth, reducing the risk of cracks or fractures compared to traditional methods.

Why We Use Biocompatible Materials:

  • The materials bond to the tooth, preventing fractures.
  • Reduced likelihood of post-operative pain or sensitivity.
  • Lower chance of fillings or onlays falling off.
  • We move forward with permanent treatment only once youโ€™re 100% happy
We also remove any cracks developing in the teeth using high magnification and precise dissection to prevent further damage. This approach reduces the chance of the tooth breaking in half and minimizes pain when chewing.

Onlay and Overlay Restorations

Instead of full crowns, we use onlay and overlay restorations, which preserve the healthy parts of your tooth and only replace the decayed or structurally weak areas. This minimizes the need for invasive procedures and protects the integrity of your natural teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is biomimetic dentistry?

Biomimetic dentistry focuses on restoring teeth using advanced materials that replicate the natural properties of your teeth. This approach preserves as much of your natural tooth structure as possible, ensuring better long-term health and functionality.

How does biomimetic dentistry reduce the need for root canals?

By preserving the tooth structure and protecting the nerve, biomimetic dentistry reduces the chances of infection, eliminating the need for a root canal.

Is biomimetic dentistry suitable for everyone?

Yes, biomimetic dentistry can be used for a wide range of dental issues, from cavities to cracked teeth, as long as the tooth structure is still healthy enough to support restoration.

How long do biomimetic restorations last?

With proper care, biomimetic restorations can last 5-10 years or longer, as the materials used are designed to bond securely to the tooth and resist wear

Do i need invisalign before veneers?

If your teeth are misaligned and your bite is not correct, you would benefit from invisalign before veneers. At LA Dental, we plan your veneers and invisalign together. This means that we do the smile design first, then move your teeth with invisalign to sit right behind where we want the veneers. This way we donโ€™t have to shave down your teeth and can be as non-invasive as possible when preparing for your veneers.

Can I get no prep veneers?

No prep veneers can work if your teeth are already smaller than the final shape of the veneers we plan. For most patients, we may do a combination of prep and no-prep veneers to do a smile makeover.
