Dental Sedation in Los Angeles

If you’re exploring options to make your dental visit more comfortable, sedation is a great option. Dental sedation involves using medication to help you relax during your treatment. It can range from something mild to ease anxiety to deeper sedation where you're barely aware of what's happening. We offer different types of sedation, and we can discuss your specific needs and concerns to determine the best approach for a calm and stress-free experience.

What are the different levels of sedation

Our dental sedation services are tailored to ensure your comfort throughout your visit. We offer several options,
  • Nitrous Ooxide (laughing gas), which is a mild sedative inhaled through a small mask to help you feel relaxed and at ease. The effects wear off quickly after the treatment.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation - For those who need a bit more relaxation. You'll take a prescribed medication before your appointment. This will make you drowsy and less aware of the procedure, though you'll still be able to respond to instructions.
  • IV sedation, which involves medication given through IV. This provides a deeper level of relaxation, and in some cases, you may have little to no memory of the procedure. You will simply wake up when the procedure is completed.
During your consultation, we'll discuss your medical history and anxiety levels to recommend the safest and most effective sedation method for you. We'll also carefully monitor you throughout your treatment to ensure your well-being.

Why Should I Get Dental Sedation?

  • Reduce anxiety and fear: Sedation can significantly alleviate dental anxiety and phobia, making the experience much more manageable.
  • Increase comfort: It helps minimize discomfort and pain during procedures, leading to a more relaxed and pleasant appointment.
  • Manage a strong gag reflex: Sedation can help suppress an overactive gag reflex, allowing for smoother treatment
  • Facilitate longer or more complex procedures: It allows you to remain comfortable and still for extended periods, which is beneficial for more involved treatments.
  • Create a more positive experience: By reducing stress and discomfort, sedation can help you feel more positive about dental visits in the future.
  • Enable necessary treatment: For some individuals with high anxiety, sedation is essential to even consider undergoing necessary dental work, ultimately benefiting their oral health.
  • Eliminate the fear and finally get your dental work completed.

Step 2: In-Person Consultation & Records Collection

  • You'll meet with our dental team to discuss your medical history, any anxieties or fears you have about dental procedures, and the treatment you'll be undergoing.
  • We'll review your current medications and any allergies to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the sedation.
  • We'll explain the different types of sedation we offer (nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation) and recommend the best option for your specific needs and the procedure.

Step 3: Pre-Sedation Instructions:

  • We'll provide you with detailed instructions on how to prepare for your sedation. This may include guidelines on eating and drinking before your appointment (fasting), as certain types of sedation require an empty stomach.
  • We'll confirm any necessary arrangements, such as having a responsible adult drive you home after the procedure, especially for oral and IV sedation.

Step 4: Day of the Procedure:

  • We'll review the sedation plan with you again and answer any last-minute questions.
  • The chosen sedation method will be administered.
  • Nitrous Oxide: You'll inhale the gas through a mask placed over your nose.
  • Oral Sedation: You'll take a prescribed sedative medication, usually in pill form.
  • IV Sedation: The sedative medication will be administered directly into your bloodstream through an IV line.

Step 5: During the Procedure

  • We'll closely monitor your vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels) throughout the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.
  • The dental procedure will be performed while you are in a relaxed or sedated state.

Step 6: Recovery

  • After the procedure is complete, the sedation effects will gradually wear off.
  • You'll be monitored in our recovery area until you are stable and safe to be discharged.
  • We'll provide you with post-sedation instructions, which may include avoiding certain activities (like driving or operating machinery) for a specific period.
  • You will be discharged to your designated Caregiver

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be asleep during sedation?

Not always. The level of sedation varies. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation typically keep you conscious but relaxed. IV sedation can result in a deeper state of relaxation, and you might feel like you were asleep or have little memory of the procedure. General anesthesia is what makes you fully unconscious, but this is less common in a general dental office. We can provide all these levels of sedation based on your needs

Is dental sedation safe?

Yes, dental sedation is generally very safe when administered by a trained and experienced dental professional. We carefully evaluate your medical history, monitor you closely during the procedure, and adhere to strict safety guidelines. As a guideline, we want to use the lowest level of sedation that will make you comfortable enough to get the procedure completed.

Will I feel any pain during the procedure?

Sedation is designed to minimize or eliminate pain and anxiety. You will also receive a local anesthetic to numb the specific area being treated, and the sedation will help you relax and feel comfortable throughout the procedure.

How long will it take to recover from sedation?

Recovery time varies depending on the type of sedation. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, and you can usually drive yourself home. Oral and IV sedation require you to have someone drive you, and it may take a few hours for the effects to wear off completely. We will provide you with specific post-sedation instructions based on your case.
