What Type Of Dentist Does Implants?

If you decide to get dental implants to replace your missing teeth, you’re about to make a significant long-term investment in your health, functioning, and quality of life. It only makes sense that you’d want to select the dentist who has the most training to perform your treatment.

For your dental implant procedure, you can visit just about any kind of dentist, but it’s crucial to understand how qualified and knowledgeable each type is. Regardless of a dentist’s specialization, you should always check their credentials and years of expertise in dental implant placement or any other dental services you’re keen on getting.

Here are the different types of dentists available for you to receive dental implants.

General Dentist

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, general dentists serve as the main source of dental care for patients of all ages. As the backbone of the dentistry profession, the diagnosis, care, administration, and overall coordination of services pertaining to patients’ oral health requirements fall under the purview of the general dentist.

Later in their careers, general dentists frequently enrolled in continuing education programs to learn how to successfully place dental implants.  Dr. Arezoo Nasiry from LA Dental, for example, is a member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, ICOI.  She has placed and restored hundreds of implant cases with over 95% success rate after 5 years.

Cosmetic Dentist

A cosmetic dentist is more concerned with the cosmetic aspects of dentistry. Even if they are adept at recovering dental implants, they are probably untrained in implant placement unless they have taken continuing education courses. A cosmetic dentist may lack the training needed to carry out more complex surgical procedures, like a general dentist.

Prosthodontist

A prosthodontist receives years of additional, specialized training after dental school. They are experts in restoring and replacing teeth, particularly through the use of prosthetics, such as dental implants and dentures. To achieve both a natural-looking and functional result, prosthodontists are also often skilled in providing treatments that are aesthetic in nature.

When teeth in the “aesthetic” zone—those that are visible when you smile—need to be replaced, these specialists are particularly competent in carrying out the job.

Periodontist

A periodontist has completed years of additional training outside of dentistry school to focus on identifying and treating issues with the gums, teeth, and bone. Additionally, they receive instruction in dental implants. A periodontist is qualified and experienced to provide individualized treatment for individuals with significant bone degeneration or gum disease prior to inserting dental implants.

Oral Surgeon

An oral surgeon is one who has received the most additional training outside of dental school. Oral surgeons are qualified to install dental implants since they are knowledgeable and extremely skilled in dental surgery, even if they are recent graduates. An oral surgeon is the best option for anyone with compromised medical conditions or highly complex cases, as you can count on their expertise from both their dental and medical training.
