Options for Adult Braces

If you’re an adult and you think that it’s too late for braces, think again! Today, more adults than ever are correcting their teeth with orthodontic procedures.

While there are still pros and cons to braces, technological advancements in the dental field have expanded the variety of braces available, giving you more choices than ever before when it comes to getting a healthy, well-aligned smile. Read on to discover some of today’s exciting options for adult braces.

Traditional Metal Braces

When you think about braces, you probably first visualize metal brackets and wires on your teeth. Wearing traditional metal braces are one of the oldest methods of repositioning your teeth. If you choose this option, be prepared for at least 18 months of treatment, but thankfully, most adult braces don’t stay on for more than 3 years – and some cases, you they can be off in as little as half a year with 6 month braces.

Here’s a quick rundown of how braces work: First, your orthodontist will fuse metal brackets to the front of your teeth and then connect a stainless steel wire to your teeth with a set of rubber bands. Every four to six weeks you’ll get your wires changed or tightened so that your teeth can be gently pushed into the desired position.

Metal braces are known to be one of the more affordable adult braces options. It takes diligence to take care of your braces to make sure your gums and teeth stay healthy during treatment, but the end results are worth all the effort.

Ceramic Braces

Adults are usually keen on avoiding anything that makes them look like a teenager. Though traditional braces on adults are quite common today, you can get ceramic braces, which blend well with the color of your teeth. Ceramic brackets can be tooth-colored or translucent while the wires can also be the same “camouflaged” color scheme.

Because of this convenience, however, ceramic braces do cost more than metal braces. But for anyone who doesn’t want to make such a dramatic change in their looks while undergoing orthodontic correction, the price increase is worth every penny.

6 Month Braces

You can fully makeover your smile with our 6-month braces option. LA Dental offers the 6 Month Smiles option for customers. This is a clear braces option that only lasts for 6 months.

They are a brand new technology in braces and allow your teeth to be moved faster than with traditional braces. They are also made of a clear material, so they are nearly invisible against your own teeth.

Invisalign or Clear Aligners

If your situation permits, you can also opt for removable plastic trays that can shape your teeth over time.  In this way, when you need to do basic tasks like eat or floss, all you have to do is remove the tray then replace it when you’re done. Adults love Invisalign because, during treatment, hardly anybody will know that you’re wearing braces.

Periodically, your orthodontist will give you a new tray that is molded into the next shape your teeth need to move into. Though Invisalign is very convenient and easy for the adult life, they’re not ideal for more serious orthodontic conditions like large tooth caps or a severe overbite. However, if you just need some minor touch-ups, Invisalign is probably the braces option you’ll like the best.
